October Curriculum Update
Math: This month in math we finished reviewing some key concepts from fourth grade. Students began the month by learning about place value concepts. Next we started the Everyday Math fifth grade unit 1. In this unit, kids have been learning how to calculate the volume of rectangular prisms and the area of rectangles. Finding the area of rectangles has been challenging as usually one side of the rectangle is a mixed number. However students have been doing a wonderful job remembering how to multiply whole numbers by mixed numbers and how to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers!
ELA: In ELA this month we finished reading the novel, Wonder. Students learned how to determine the theme, or lesson, of a text. We analyzed many story details of Wonder to determine the theme of that book. Students have also started studying Greek and Latin prefixes and suffixes to help with vocabulary development. Finally, we have also been working on some Social Studies subjects within the context of ELA. Students have been reading about various landforms and answering questions. Some of the landforms we have studied thus far include oceans, islands, and bays.
Writing: We began October by continuing to build student writing stamina. Students received a high interest prompt and tried to write at least five sentences answering the question. There were some very creative responses! Later in the month, we started a study of fiction writing. We have been working on planning a fictional story. Some of the elements students have been working on planning include their story's characters, setting, and plot. In November, we will start drafting the story!

September Curriculum Update
Math: This month we have been reviewing some key concepts from fourth grade to help build a good base of knowledge for fifth grade math. Specifically, students have been reviewing multiplication. We have worked on everything from basic multiplication facts to multiplying two by two digit numbers using the array method and the traditional method. We have also been spending quite a bit of time reviewing division. Students have learned to divide up to three digit numbers using the partial quotients method. This method is different from the traditional method of solving division problems so if you'd like to see how its done, check out the video to the right!

ELA: We have picked up with the read aloud we started back in March of last year: Wonder. This is a great book that highlights the importance of kindness and also teaches kids to embrace the qualities that make them unique. In class we have been studying character traits and analyzing the traits of the characters in Wonder. Students have also been using their inferencing skills to "read between the lines" and use clues from the story to determine a character's traits. We have also been discussing perspective and reading short passages to help practice identifying what perspective the story is being told from.
Writing: This month we have been working on building writing stamina. Students receive short interesting questions to consider. Every day there is a different writing prompt. We have been focusing on writing in complete sentences with appropriate punctuation.
